So like I said in the Fanart thread, it would be better to move the talk about doing digital art to another thread. I copy the last part about the discussion, so we can move on: What do you want to know exactly? The Brushes or the program? I personally use Photoshop and a graph tablet. It's a really small one, but I couldn't purchase a bigger one with good quality. Brushes: I mostly use this one with diffrent Hardness, Opacity and Fill: The rest depends on my objective, I haven't a fixed one there. If I want to make textures, I mostly define an own brush. 1. Can I also ask you a question about your digiart? 2. Would I be better If we make a new thread for digiart advises? I use GIMP 2.8 . * s o b s* I'm a total noob with the tinkering of brush texture and most of the brushes that I've found are exclusive for Adobe Photoshop (though I also use that occasionally but unfortunately, I kinda forgot how to use it because of lack of practice with the program </3.) And idk why or maybe I am just really an idiot but I can't exactly tinker with my brushes in GIMP. 1. Sure thing . I'll try my best to be as... articulate as possible. HAHAHA. 2. Well... yeah. XD (Sorry guys </3) I personally tried Gimp once, but it's not my favorite. Could be because I trained Photoshop first. In general GIMP has fewer functions than Photoshop, but you can install a lot or applications to add functions. The basic principle, creating brushes in Photoshop is not that difficult. I could show you, if you want. Maybe there is an application you can add, so you are able to do create brushes in GIMP, too. Now my question: My personal problem in digiart is hair. Especially when it should look fine and thin? How should I explain it? When I'm doing hair the form always looks rough and really thick, not like normal hair. So I like to know how you ding it, creating such fine hair?

I hope this is a good place to place this thread. I was not quite sure, where I should to place it. But since we talk about creating artworks, I thought placing it under fanart would be ok.

Well, I was kiiiiindaaaaaaa forced to use GIMP 'cause my laptop broke and the family doesn't want to provide me with another one (THAT WAS THE 3rd LAPTOP I'VE DESTROYED LIKE IDK HOW BUT MY HANDS ARE CURSED MAYBE? <///3) and so I lost my Photoshop app (and I have a talent for finding viruses so I don't really trust myself to download applications in gadgets not mine XD). And it only has GIMP. AND THE STRUGGLE STARTED THERE I mean, I was also trained in Photoshop and the transition was quite hard... * s o b s* I agree that the GIMP has fewer functions and tbh, creating neat lineart is difficult (FOR ME) as compared to Photoshop. I'd really appreciate it if you could show me how to create brushes :3. As for the hair, I use the dodge and burn tool. LIBERALLY. Oh wait, how do I upload photos here? (I only know the linking photos part...) So that I could show you how I do it

Bad: you have to pay it monthly, the good thing is: the rent for only Photoshop is really cheap. Okay so I will make a tutorial for you, when I have some free time. There was a Tutorial for adding pictures in Announcements and Guides for Everyone > How to add pictures . But I could not find the bottom to upload pictures. So I upload them on postImage and then use the link method.

So I upload them on postImage and then use the link method. Omg, thank yooou :"> I have been enlightened XD. (Same here, the Attachment button doesn't show.) 1. Crappy lineart (It's your choice if you want to use your lineart but in my case... well, I suck at that so I don't use it XD) 2. Base color3. Use Burn tool for your preliminary shadows :3 4. Use either Smudge or Airbrush for blending the rough parts (I use a combination of both.)
5. Use Burn Tool for the strands (At this part, I'll only do the first half XD). WARNING: PATIENCE WILL RUN OUT. SOOTHING MUSIC NECESSARY. HAHAHA. This part will give your hair the volume and depth seen in natural hair. I stopped using my lineart in this part.
6. Use Dodge tool for the "surface" hair. These hair strands are the ones hit by light so they are lighter :3.
7. For the "outliers" strands, I use Paintbrush at 50% opacity at 1 px. Or whatever smallest size you have. But you can also use Airbrush. Hair isn't really clumped together so having outliers will give that natural look :3 (I've never tried making my bangs so clumped together btw --> * used her own hair for reference HAHAHA*)
8. I use Smudge tool for the tips. You can re-Burn and re-Dodge it if you want more volume. I only did the rightmost part btw.
9. TADAAAAAA~ Readjust the contrast or the shadows, and eveyrthing you want to adjust XD. In this case, I re-Burned the shadows.
Painting the realistic hair is so tedious (honestly speaking, and it's not that I'm discouraging you or anything but let's be realistic XD). BUT IT'S WORTH IT. REALLY. Especially when you have that output Well, having a reaaaaaaaally soothing background music really helps af.

Okay, I just thought I made a short notice: I don't know how to change the language of my Photoshop, I don't if that is even possible (if you don't want to change something in the files). So I will put some translation next to the things. Assumed I need to show you some menus.

So now, here is my Brush-Tutorial. I will upload two tutorials, one about creating brushes in general, and another about creating a brush-texture. Note: This tutorial will be for Photoshop, it can be different in other programs.1. Made a new file: 200 x 200. I can be smaller, but it should not be bigger. Ideal: 200 x 200 and white background. 2. Hypothetical everything is up to your imagination. There are different ways to createa brush. You can use other brushes, photos, filter . . . For this example I just use a normal brush and changed Opacity and Flow. This brush doesn't make much sense, I just made some dots. Important: Only use Black, White and everything in between (gray scale). But no colors. 3. Then do Edit > define Brush PresetBrush Preset . Give the brush a name. Afterwards, the brush should appear in the gallery 4. Now you can use the brush, like very other brush. (In this example I also changed Opacity and Flow of the brush)

So now I show you an example of cretaing a brush for texturizing. Of cousre, this is just an example, you can do it like you want. I use my meredith fanart as an example. Here without texture: 1. The basics are the same. 200 x 200, only black till white etc. 2. No we need a basis. Therefore do: Filter > Noise > Add Noise
3. now we need to edith it. I use a filter: Filter > Filter Galery > Brush Strokes > Crosshatch
4. then the usual: Edit > define Brush PresetBrush Preset, give it a name and you can use it I personally made a Selection, so I don't paint over the edge. ( I admit, the brush is hard to see in this forum ) 5. Now you can use it. I personally change Opacity and Flow, so you don't see the edges. I can texture the jacket with that brush. So I hope my tutorials where useful to you. Ask questions if you like

Ugh.I'll try to utilize this into GIMP and I'll see what happens XD (But at least, I now have an idea what to do in GIMP)
